Bird Post & Wire
Post & wire is a bird deterrent system designed to prevent specific birds from landing and perching on edges, cornices and ledges within light pressure environments. This type of prevention is considered a low profile alternative to spikes. Still, it will not prevent birds within medium or heavy pressure sites such as nesting, so caution should be undertaken to understand the limitation of install.
A bird post & wire system is basically a wire held under tension between 2 points using a spring. The wire is set at a specific height to act as an uncomfortable experience if the target bird’s breast pushes against the system, which discourages the bird and encourages perching in a different location. The type of spring used allows flexibility within the wire, an important part; otherwise, the system is prone to failure.
This system is best suited towards building facade and is often used on historical buildings, museums and art galleries. The more observant viewers will note that this system is prevalent in cities and often seen on buildings within London, including around Leicester & Trafalgar Square.
Primarily designed to prevent pigeons, this system will work against gulls; however, the correct materials must be used. The spacing is undertaken correctly due to considerable differences between the bird species.
The system is straightforward to install and requires minimal experience or knowledge. It can be an excellent cost-effective solution for treating large areas; however, it may be more time-consuming than spikes as the installers have to undertake drilling works for the post & rivets.
We recommend a minimum 2 rows of wire, spaced at 1.5m intervals. In certain circumstances, an entire ledge should be protected using multi-rows of wire depending on the ledge’s depth.
Posts are generally used between the wiring system; occasionally users may wish to use split pins or screw rings for certain installations. Regardless of the fixing method, we recommend the following height for the post wire.
- Pigeons – 90mm for the front leading edge and 130mm for the 2nd row.
- Gulls – 160mm to 180mm depending on the system.
If using with anchor rivets installers should purchase lengths +20mm (i.e. 110mm & 150mm for pigeons)
Whilst not essential, we recommend using the bird wire crimper tool, which is made specifically for bird wire installations. This tool allows for crimping of ferrules and cutting wire single handling as can be undertaken single-handed.
