Bird Prevention Categories
At Birdgo we sell several options to control and prevent pest birds from buildings and other unwanted locations. Whilst bird prevention can be straight forward, and most installations require little or no experience to prevent the target bird from being excluded from an area. Before works are undertaken, installers must be aware of the approrpriate bird control regulations as all birds are protected by law. Some general licences are available for specific birds if the task is regarding health and safety and some other factors that can be found here. We recommend that most of our products should be used before or after an infestation, especially outside of any breeding seasons, allowing users to avoid unnecessary stress to the target bird and to comply with any regulations. We only manufacture and sell products for birds considered pests, mainly pigeons, gulls, starlings, sparrows and corvids. All of our prevention devices are designed to prevent rather than harm, and it is the user’s responsibility to install the prevention device correctly. Except for a few limited scenerios no harm should be carried out to birds and our products have been designed to prevent taking this action.
Some of our products below are suitable only for specific birds, and often will only work on certain pressure sites. Installers must understand each prevention device’s pros and cons to minimise the chance of failure or to harm the bird, something that should be avoided at all times. Pressure sites are classed within 3 categories, which are:
- Low Pressure – Birds are perching on ledges and causing minimal damage. Generally located in residential areas.
- Medium Pressure – Birds are roosting overnight, especially in flocks – general perching within areas of high bird populations, such as within towns.
- High Pressure – Birds are nesting or roosting in areas where numbers of birds are again in a high population.
The correct product must be purchased as not all of the below options will be suitable to prevent or control the problem. If you are unsure, and as a general rule, we recommend installing netting as the best prevention option as this is a physical barrier that birds can not bypass and has a low failure rats, anti-perching spikes when netting is inappropriate or when covering areas that birds cannot land. Bird post & wire systems is a popular discreet alternative to spikes but should be used in only light pressure areas as birds can overcome systems if they have little other options available for perching.
Bird Netting & Accessories
High-quality netting manufactured specifically to prevent pest birds from gaining access to a wide range of areas including over plant rooms, sides of building facades and under-car park service ducts. The type of the area to be netted is limitless. If installed correctly, netting will not hurt the target bird and will act as total physical protection that birds are unable to enter. Nets are made in the UK from 7/7 knotted polyethene, UV treated and will last in excess of 10 years and considerably longer within enclosed environments. Recommended as the first and best choice to prevent birds.
Nets are available in 4 main sizes. 75mm for gulls, 50mm for pigeons, 28mm for starlings and 19mm for sparrows. The majority of our nets are available in black, white (aka translucent) and stone.
The type of net purchased should be specific to the target bird. We do not recommend installing pigeon netting to stop gulls.
We sell a range of suitable fixings that most users will require for the installation of netting. Fixings are available in stainless steel for installations within external environments & galvanised for internal installations or when on a budget.
Suitable for Low, Medium & Heavy pressure sites. Netting available for all main pest bird species.
Anti-Perching Spikes
Spikes are an excellent measure to prevent pigeons and gulls from perching on ledges and other areas where they might be causing a pest nuisance. Spikes must be installed in the correct environment, such as chimney stacks and ridges for gulls and parapets, fencing and signage for pigeons. Spikes are bird specific, and pigeon spikes are unlikely to work against gulls. No spikes are presently available for sparrows or starlings.
All bird spikes are constructed from a combination of UV-stabilised plastic bases and stainless steel rods, which allow for installation for all environments including within coastal areas.
We do not recommend installing spikes over large surfaces such as a dormer roof or within heavy pressure sites where birds can land adjacent to the spikes.
Failure of spikes is generally uncommon; however when this does occur, and in the vast majority of circumstances, it can be put down to the installation either via the wrong adhesive or preparation to the area. Our spikes include fixing holes that partially act as a glue rivet and a convenient hole for screws.
Suitable for Low & Medium pressure sites only. Can be used with Heavy pressure sites with caution.
Anti-Perching Post & Bird Wire
A low-profile deterrent to prevent pigeons or gulls from landing on parapets and specific areas such as ridgelines. The tensioned wire does not prevent landing but makes the bird uncomfortable by putting pressure on their breast, and this will deter the bird from returning. Bird wire is straightforward to install and can be a cost-effective alternative to bird spikes. However, they do not offer the same protection level, and they are only suitable for low-pressure sites only.
We recommend that a minimum of 2 rows of bird wire are installed to the outer ledges of buildings and other protected areas as necessary, with larger multi-rows encouraged when costs allowed.
Bird wire should not be used within areas of high pressure or when birds are nesting or roosting.
Suitable for Low-pressure sites. Can be used with Medium pressure sites with caution.
Solar Protection
Pigeons and other birds have quickly adapted to nesting under solar panels, as they provide an excellent area to breed whilst being covered from the elements and other predatory animals. We lead in the options available for their control, including installing spikes or more heavy-duty, but more complicated, weld mesh systems.
Like netting, users are installing a permanent and physical barrier that specific birds cannot cross and thus can be used in all types of pressure including where birds are nesting. Our spike options are available to prevent pigeons only, the main culprit, and mesh will generally cover all pest bird species including starlings and sparrows. Our mesh is available in both galvanised or black PVC coated.
Suitable for all pressure sites including heavy.
Cleaning & Safety
Some birds, including pigeons, carry diseases, especially via guano and fouling, that can be harmful to human health and steps should be taken to minimise risk. Bird waste should be treated to remove dangerous buildups of bacteria often found in high concentrations and reclassify waste to non-hazardous, an issue if dealing with waste on a trade level.
Several well-documented cases have shown that not taking the correct steps can be fatal and should not be underestimated. Users should wear the correct PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) which should include a suitable respirator, gloves and in certain circumstances full body suites, especially when dealing with bulk waste.
Suitable for all pressure sites including heavy.
